Performance of offshore wind systems

France Energies Marines develops robust solutions to optimise the performance of offshore wind systems. We are working to improve design methods and tools and the reliability of offshore wind farms.

Optimising the performance of offshore wind systems

We develop robust solutions to optimise the performance of offshore wind tsystems. Our work aims to improve the design and reliability of wind farms throughout their operational life. To achieve this, the representativeness of models can be increased by using an in-service monitoring approach that combines digital twins and in situ sensors. Characterising the behaviour of critical components to assess their performance levels is also crucial.

At the farm level, optimising operations and maintenance is also important to achieve the best compromise between cost and availability. Another key area of focus is integration into electricity grids by studying solutions such as floating substations (HVAC/HVDC) or power-to-x.

A dedicated team and resources to improve the performance of offshore wind systems

Our Systems and Performance Department covers a wide range of disciplines: structural and fluid mechanics, hydrodynamics, applied mathematics, geotechnics, electrical engineering, etc. Our team’s work combines numerical modelling, tools development, laboratory testing, and sea trials.

The Institute has two infrastructures that are particularly well suited to the study of critical components. The mooring demonstrator is a 7-tonne buoy equipped with a semi-tensioned hybrid chain-nylon anchor and several sensors. It provides a small-scale representation of the average dynamic forces generated by a floating wind turbine. Our Institute also has several instrumented buoys equipped with biofouling monitoring devices.
