Social acceptability and environmental monitoring

We support consulting firms in assessing the cumulative effects required as part of environmental impact assessments for offshore wind farms. These assessments will draw on trophic modelling of ecosystems to produce robust and detailed analyses that meet regulatory requirements.

We offer training courses on calculating cumulative effects using trophic ecosystem modelling. These courses aim to introduce the theory of trophic modelling and present methods for calculating cumulative effects, as well as the ecosystem health indicators generated, in order to enhance teams’ autonomy and ensure the quality of deliverables produced in response to tenders.

We design innovative environmental monitoring protocols, tailored to the specific characteristics of each project and the scientific question being addressed, and covering all components of the ecosystem. These protocols may relate to marine megafauna, biofouling, ecotoxicology or other environmental issues specific to the site under study.

Monitoring the impact of offshore wind farms and their proliferation on marine megafauna (birds, bats, fish and marine mammals) requires integrated monitoring methods. France Energies Marines therefore offers to support engineering consultancies in setting up multimodal environmental monitoring programmes that combine monitoring methods to meet regulatory requirements, optimise the costs associated with data acquisition and processing, and produce more reliable and comprehensive information..

The support provided includes defining a data acquisition protocol (instrument, acquisition cycle, necessary maintenance), setting up a data transfer process and determining storage methods, configuring an annotation platform, annotating images, setting up and training automated models, and finally analysing the data..

  • Monitoring the project’s impact on fish populations using acoustic telemetry

Acoustic telemetry enables the characterisation of the initial state, followed by monitoring of the project’s impact during the construction, operational and decommissioning phases of the wind farm. Our expertise across the entire process—from implementation to data processing—enables us to deliver high-value-added collaboration.

We design the acoustic telemetry network, assist with its implementation (deployment and tagging of target species), analyse the data using processing algorithms and interpret it drawing on our expertise, and then integrate it into the European network (ETN).

  • Monitoring migration patterns in relation to weather and ocean conditions

Against the backdrop of the development of offshore wind power in France, the issue of coexistence between these structures and flying wildlife raises significant challenges regarding the public acceptance of wind power projects. It is therefore essential to gain a better understanding of how birds and bats use the marine environment in order to adapt the environmental risk assessment measures for wind power projects. Whilst the feeding and habitat areas of many species are now relatively well identified, migration routes, particularly in offshore environments, remain largely unknown.

The experts at France Energies Marines offer to support engineering consultancies in carrying out statistical modelling using machine learning and interpretable AI methods to provide insights into the relationship between weather conditions and bird flows.

  • Implementation of automated data processing models

Drawing on three years of acoustic and image data collected and analysed at the Fécamp mast, we support engineering firms in implementing automated models for in situ data processing for the environmental monitoring of wind farms. These tools help to optimise the volume of data to be processed, improve reliability and enhance the detection of marine mammals and birds.

The support provided involves defining a data acquisition protocol, setting up a data transfer process, configuring an annotation platform, annotating images, setting up and training automated models, and finally analysing the data. France Energies Marines draws on experience in deploying various types of instruments, having acquired and processed several hundred terabytes of video data in less than two years, as well as in developing its own automated models.

Modelling and characterisation of environmental conditions

  • Hydrodynamic modelling of contaminant dispersion in seawater

To anticipate chemical risks and ensure they are taken into account in ARC measures, we assist engineering consultancies in analysing the dispersion of contaminants such as aluminium from anti-corrosion coatings, biocides associated with hydrogen production, as well as microplastics and lubricants. The development of hydrodynamic models enables the modelling of the dispersion of chemical elements in the water column and the study of their evolution over time. This modelling also allows for the consideration of contributions from other natural or anthropogenic sources of these elements to facilitate a comparative analysis. This modelling can constitute the first step in risk characterisation in accordance with the European REACH Regulation.

  • Optimisation of ballast water and cooling system management

We carry out hydrodynamic studies to guide the design of ballast water discharge systems, with a view to minimising environmental impact whilst ensuring a balance between technical and economic considerations.
We provide recommendations on the environmental optimisation of ballast water and hydrogen production water discharges, as well as cooling systems.

  • Coupled ocean-wave-atmosphere modelling

We use unique coupled ocean-wave-atmosphere models that include wave-wind feedback. This advanced modelling provides high-resolution spatial and temporal data, enabling more reliable input data for more realistic design calculations.

  • Turbulence intensity calculation

Using TwinDAR©, our turbulence intensity reconstruction algorithm, we calculate turbulence intensity from both airborne and ground-based lidar measurements with greater reliability than traditional methods, enabling a detailed characterisation of on-site wind conditions. These refined values allow for the definition of more accurate load cases, optimising wind turbine sizing and thereby reducing CAPEX.

  • Optimisation of sensor positioning

For large-scale potential assessment areas, we optimise the layout of lidar sensors to characterise extensive areas and calculate energy production capacity.

The TwinDAR© tool, developed by France Energies Marines, uses the variance method to eliminate two major sources of error in the calculation of turbulence intensity using lidar: the inter-beam effect and instrumental noise. These refined turbulence values enable the generation of realistic aerodynamic load cases for improved design of turbines, towers and transition sections, as well as a more realistic estimate of energy yield.

  • Characterisation of extreme winds and waves in cyclonic conditions

Using TAIFU‑WindWaves©, we accurately calculate joint wind-wave statistics under cyclonic conditions, which are essential for generating extreme load cases. These analyses enable the performance and reliability of offshore structures to be optimised right from the design stage.

  • Characterisation of wave breaking and their impact on structures

Waves breaking over offshore structures generate a high-amplitude impact force known as slamming. This force contributes to the ultimate limit states (ULS), excites the structure’s natural modes and generates large moments at the base of the foundation. France Energies Marines draws on its tools and methods, which have been referenced in DNV-RPC205, to provide a more accurate estimate of hydrodynamic forces, including slamming, and to calculate the structural response, thereby avoiding the over-design of offshore structures.

  • TAIFU‑WindWaves©

We have developed the TAIFU‑WindWaves© tool, which uses Monte Carlo simulations to jointly calculate extreme winds and waves caused by tropical cyclones. The tool addresses several strategic requirements relating to the life cycle of systems. It reduces uncertainties associated with extreme winds and waves during the design phase. It contributes to risk analysis during the development phase. Finally, it enables the assessment of fatigue and the service life of systems during the operational phase. The tool is also applicable to the analysis of extreme winds at onshore sites..

  • DIMPACT

We have developed the DIMPACT tool, which calculates hydrodynamic forces, including slamming. The output data consists of time series of hydrodynamic forces representing the regular components associated with linear waves and the slamming components associated with breaking waves. These more accurate and less conservative values can then be incorporated into a finite element tool for structural response calculations.

  • Characterisation of inter-ferm wake effects

We offer wake modelling between wind farms using different types of models: engineering wake models and mesoscale models with parameterisation. This comparison provides a range of results that can be used to refine annual energy production (AEP) calculations and recommendations for design load cases, as well as to correct wind speed and turbulence measurements.
