COMPASS

A comprehensive offshore management platform for assessing sustainability

Motivation & background

Europe is rapidly expanding its offshore wind capacity, from around 34 GW in 2023 to at least 88 GW by 2030 and 360 GW by 2050. While vital for the energy transition, this growth raises key questions about the life-cycle sustainability of offshore wind farms, their impacts on marine ecosystems, communities and regional economies, and how best to balance costs, impacts and benefits over time and across sea basins.

  • To develop an open-source decision-support platform to assess and improve the environmental, social and economic sustainability of offshore wind farms across their full life cycle

Expected results

  • A comprehensive decision-support platform enabling more sustainable, cost-effective, and socially responsible offshore wind deployment across Europe.
  • A comprehensive, life-cycle-based and time-efficient sustainability assessment framework applicable to the vast majority of offshore wind farm designs.
  • Improved understanding on the negative and positive impacts of OWF
  • Enhanced impact transparency, stakeholder engagement, and informed decision-making for offshore wind development across Europe.
