Job Description
France Energies Marines is leading several research projects aimed at improving the characterization of wind conditions for offshore wind projects. Current issues addressed by the institute include resource characterization, turbulence, coupled ocean-wave-atmosphere modelling, extreme events (such as cyclones) and wake effects between offshore wind farms.
As part of the development of our business to support the growth of the French offshore wind energy sector, we are recruiting a research scientist in atmospheric modelling applied to offshore wind energy, to help set up and manage projects in close collaboration with experts from the Site Characterization team.
Missions
As part of the Institute’s R&D Site characterization Program, the candidate will lead collaborative research projects on atmospheric characterization involving academic and industrial partners. The candidate’s main tasks will be to:
- Coordinate and manage France Energies Marines collaborative research projects (€1 to 3M)
- Define and set up R&D projects in conjunction with the scientific management and the existing R&D team
- Develop the atmospheric characterization research topic within the Institute to meet the needs of the industry
- Contribute to the scientific tasks of France Energies Marines projects
- Supervise doctoral and post-doctoral students
- Strengthen the Institute’s links with industrial players in the field and develop collaborations with European and international research institutes in the offshore wind field
- Contribute to the construction of research programs of the Institute, including investments in offshore infrastructures and the valorisation of the Institute’s assets
- Write technical reports and notes.
Required Skills
Education
Degree in engineering, Master or PhD in atmospheric modelling or observation
Specific expertise
• Atmospheric boundary layer physics (ideally including interactions with wind farms), and associated numerical models
• Knowledge of historical databases or climate projections
A knowledge of setting up and managing collaborative projects with numerous partners (e.g. JIP-type projects) would be appreciated.
Professional experience
• Operation of mesoscale atmospheric models such as Meso-NH, WRF
• R&D activities in offshore wind, wind turbine sizing or wake effects
• Proven research activities through publication in peer-reviewed journals
An experience in observation via lidar or satellite measurements would be appreciated.
Professional skills
• Leadership and ability to bring people together
• Excellent writing skills and good oral expression in English
• Scientific rigor and critical analysis
• Curiosity, autonomy, organization and ability to make proposals
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
