Job Description

The Eastern Channel and Southern North Sea (ECSNS) facade concentrates an important source of renewable energies for France and is the subject of several commercial offshore wind farms projects. With the development of activities and projects, the issue of taking into account the cumulative impact of human activities on the functioning of marine ecosystems is crucial. The assessment of cumulative impacts must be able to consider issues at the local scale (e.g. cumulative effects on benthic habitats) as well as at the regional scale (e.g. cumulative effects of various anthropogenic activities).

France Energies Marines is recruiting a researcher specialized in trophic models for the application of an ecosystem approach to the development of OREs. In close collaboration with experts from the Environmental Integration of ORE team and France Energies Marines’ partners, the candidate will contribute to the development of trophic models at nested scales for the assessment of cumulative impacts. He/She will contribute to better characterize the effects of these cumulative impacts (synergistic, antagonistic, additive) and to continue work on ecosystem health indicators for a better understanding of the response of marine ecosystems to various anthropogenic pressures. The consideration of ecological, sociological and economic issues will provide a vision and a holistic assessment of the impacts.

Missions

The missions of the candidate will be to:

  • Contribute to the development of research activities and expertise services in connection with the ecosystem approach applied to ORE;
  • Set up and coordinate collaborative research projects on the ecosystem approach to ORE;
  • Develop in-depth expertise in environmental and socio-economic issues, specific to the ECSNS facade, to be integrated into a trophic modeling approach to produce sustainable management scenarios;
  • Contribute to the scientific tasks of the projects, supervise doctoral and postdoctoral students and present the results in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences;
  • Develop and strengthen France Energies Marines’ close collaborations with research institutes in the ECSNS area, as well as national, European, and international institutes in the field of the ecosystem approach.

Required Skills

Initial training
PhD in biology or marine ecology

Specific knowledge
Required:
• Ease of communication and ability to mobilize actors for the collection of data and information for modeling purposes
• Good knowledge of programming tools and under R
• Research activities proven by scientific publications and communications
Desirable:
• Knowledge of the ORE sector and the ECSNS ecosystem

Work experience
• Proven experience in trophic modeling such as Ecopath with Ecosim and its associated modules or other ecosystem models
• Experience in R&D activities in the marine environment related to anthropogenic activities
• Experience in collaborative and/or partnership research projects

Professional qualities
• Scientific rigour, autonomy, and ability to work in a team
• Ability to work on several projects simultaneously
• Good writing and communication skills in French and English
• Appetite for applied and collaborative research (Research Institutes, companies, etc.)
